Symantec has released a report that shows threats from malware and cyber attacks continue to grow and are unlikely to slow over the next two years. The report shows that IT managers at large organizations, like Small to Midsize Business managers are experiencing tightening budgets, increased regulations and challenges in providing adequate staffing to secure their corporate data.

The Managed Security in the Enterprise Report (March 2009) focuses on large organizations and surveys 1,000 IT managers in US and European enterprises but there are clearly similarities in the environment at Small to Midsize Business.

Some interesting findings from the report:

• 46% report cyber threats have somewhat / significantly increased in the past two years and are expected to somewhat / significantly increase in the next two years.
• 88% of survey respondents reported cyber attacks on their businesses in the last two years.
• 31% report attacks occur on a regular basis and 10% have experienced a large or extremely large number of attacks in the last two years.

The largest reported loss from the attacks was downtime at 46% of respondents with 31% reporting theft of customer or employee personally identifiable information.

In response to the growing threat, increased regulatory pressures and lack of resources, 61% have reported contracting a Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP). The benefits include:
